Today, I climb for 15 km before discovering a barbed wire fence, making it impossible to cross the border. I had to go back 10km, then on the highway with bike for 300m, cross farmlands to be able to avoid having to ride 3+km on the highway. I lost 2 hours this morning to do barely 5km, I wanted to do 120km today. That failed miserably. I am now in the middle of nowhere in Serbia, trying to figure out what I will do next. On top of that, the wind picked up again, facing me…
Another “failed day” that was enjoyable but due to my misadventures in the morning, I missed my objective by 50km. Tonight I will have to spend some time planning to route so I arrive in time in Budapest.
On top of that, I did not eat properly, which created a huge energy crash during the afternoon, and lost confidence. I will have to plan a break day soon, hopefully in Belgrade but it is approx 3 days of biking away (maybe that is too much).
About borders: The article “Simply… The History Of Borders” from 1991, explains the historical and political reasons for the creation and enforcement of borders between nation-states. It points out that borders are not natural or inevitable, but rather the result of colonialism, imperialism, and the rise of the modern nation-state. The article traces the history of border-making, including the use of natural features to demarcate territories, the impact of colonialism on borders in Africa and Asia, and the role of nation-states in creating and enforcing borders.
The article also highlights the negative consequences of border enforcement, including the restriction of movement and the creation of social, economic, and political divisions. Overall borders are a somewhat recent concept that damages our world and freedom. Source: https://newint.org/features/1991/09/05/simply
