Day 15 – I really don’t want to go

Wake up late, at 9h30, and procrastinate, It was a slow to start, I pack my stuff, drink water, breakfast, and finally manage to leave at 11h00, Yaneev walks me out the door, Adam and Maltida are still sleeping. I really don’t want to go, but I start riding.

Preparing trail mix

Getting out of Bololgna takes a bit of time, but soon enough, I end up in the country side. The road is a straight line for 100km, no real bike path, quite a lot of traffic, but I know I will do a big break at Imola (at the race track, there is a big park in the middle).

Looking at cars, lots of race cars at the track and the city. Part of the lpha Tauri team is here too.
Ayrton Senna da Silva memorial. He was a Brazilian racing driver who won the Formula One World Drivers’ Championship in 1988, 1990, and 1991.

I spend some time at the track, just enjoying the atmosphere, brainstorming sleeping options for the night, and charging the speaker… eat again

Random history: Imola 1994 – F1’s worst weekend

The weekend of the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix didn’t get off to the best of starts. On the Friday during practice, Rubens Barrichello had a collision at the Variante Bassa chicane. He flew through the air and into fencing which resulted in a severe concussion.

Then on the Saturday during qualifying Roland Ratzenberger lost his life. As he travelled at 195mph into Villeneuve corner, he was unable to steer the car. This caused him to crash into a retaining wall almost head on.

The race started with a collison between Benetton driver JJ Lehto and Lotus driver Pedro Lamy. This collision caused debris to fly over the fences and injured 8 spectators.

Ayrton Senna came speeding into Tambeurello. However, due to possible mechanical failure, the Williams car came off the track and collided with a wall. The crash had caused a piece of suspension to come apart from the car and pierced through his helmet causing fatal head injuries.

As the race continued another incident caused injuries to 4 mechanics, as a wheel from Michele Alboreto’s Minardi came off as he exited the pit lane.

Relaxing next to the race track (and solar panel charging the speaker)

The rest of the day is boring, the road is straight, lots of traffic, heat, but I keep going, put a good Playlist on and try to not think about the kilometers.

Arrived at the beach! Well no really, I go to the camping directly, sent up my tent, answer emails for Bankroll, charge electronics, take a shower and then finally leave the camping walking, 6 minutes to the beach. It is already night but I spend a bit of time sitting on the sand, and looking at the dark clouds coming from the north east, lighting strikes everywhere, big storm coming.
